KidsView Volunteers – 2018

Students in a KidsView workshop.

KidsView conferences give students a chance to discuss social justice topics with their peers.

Volunteer for KidsView

KidsView is a series of social justice conferences for schools. Bookings are filling quickly and we need volunteers to help run each conference. This year, we are hosting 9 Melbourne  and 1 Sydney conference. With 10 volunteers required for each one, we have 150 volunteer days to roster!

Volunteer Requirements

Workshop Facilitators would be required to be at the conferences from 10am – 1pm at minimum, but are welcome to be assist from 8.30am – 3pm. We can provide babysitting for toddlers and the role of the workshop facilitator fits perfectly if you need to pick up school-aged children.

Each volunteer will need a Working With Children’s Check. These are available free of charge at a post office if you nominate BTPA as the charity.

As part of the newly introduced ‘Child Safe Standards’, each volunteer will need to read, understand and implement our Child Protection Policy. A signed copy of volunteers’ undertaking is needed for our records. This, and OHS training, will be part of our volunteer preparation day on Saturday, 14th April. If you are unable to attend the training day, we will be able to conduct training on the day – provided you have a valid WWCC or receipt that it is being processed.

Volunteer Roles

We need 8 Workshop Facilitators who will help run interactive workshops for groups of approx 10 high school or primary school students. The workshops have been designed to encourage the students to explore issues of poverty first hand, focusing particularly on the themes of food, education, work and health. Facilitators will be provided with modules to follow and all necessary materials. They will be required to lead the students through the activities and then run a facilitated discussion afterwards. Facilitators with first hand experience working in development are encouraged to draw on and share this during the discussion. Each workshop lasts for approximately 45 minutes. There are two workshops in a row at a conference.

Each conference requires 2 Conference Assistants. These volunteers would be involved in helping set up the conferences. They would be involved in any of the following activities; preparing materials for workshops, distributing materials to students, preparing morning tea and lunch, babysitting younger children so their parent can facilitate a workshop, and packing up at the end of the day.  No special skills are required – just a willingness to help out between 8.30am – 3pm on conference days. You do not need to attend the whole day as even an hour or so would help

We would also appreciate Administrative Assistance in the weeks leading up to KidsView conferences. This includes checking workshop packs, printing and creating name tags and certificates and collating printing for students. To help with administrative tasks or to be a general volunteer for BTPA, please complete this form

Volunteer Training Day

Workshop Facilitators will need to attend a training session (Saturday, APRIL 14th) at 21 Cooper St, Essendon at 3pm.  We encourage experienced facilitators to attend this workshop too as we have important information about OHS and Child Safe Compliance.
