KidsView

Conferences and Incursions

KidsView is an annual series of social justice conferences and incursions designed to provide opportunities for Australians to make lasting change towards a socially just world.

Catherine Scerri (Executive Director of Bahay Tuluyan) accompanies two youth ambassadors from Bahay Tuluyan. They share their story, bringing a real voice to issues of poverty, education, social justice and the capacity for us all to make a difference.

There are details below about the learning outcomes, curriculum links and key details.

Facilitators

Without a doubt, one of the highlights of KidsView is connecting with the staff and children at Bahay Tuluyan.

These young Filipinos have faced the challenges of extreme poverty and are now inspiring leaders in their community. They generously share their stories to help Australian students connect and understand the personal impact of poverty on children around the world.

Catherine is an Australian who has been volunteering/working in the Philippines since 2003. She works closely with vulnerable children ensuring their basic human rights (safety, housing, education, food, etc) are met.

As Director of Bahay Tuluyan, Catherine advocates strongly for a socially just world. Her passion is contagious as she inspires everyone to do what they can, where they are. Catherine will be in Australia to facilitate the conferences.

“I learned that we can help. It inspired me to do everything I can to make the world a better place. I learned that I am so very rich and that in everything I do, I can really make a difference. We can do so much more than we think we can. This conference inspired me to try and do something about poverty.” – Participant

Learning Outcomes

As a KidsView participant, students will:

Consider the complex reality of extreme poverty.

Participate in workshops to showcase the multitude of factors in determining one’s health, wealth, education, work and home situation.

Identify links between comparative wealth and power to determine outcomes.

Be challenged to become agents for social change in their own community.

Participants

Conferences allow a range of smaller groups from different schools to attend KidsView. Schools often send social justice groups, student leadership teams, or simply interested students.

Incursions cater to entire classes/year-levels and are a terrific way to drive or supplement an inquiry and engage the whole school.

We recommend the program for students in Year 5 – 10.

Testimonials

‘This is an invaluable opportunity for the students to listen, learn and ask questions with people who have lived in poverty. The presenters were engaging and my students are now buzzing with ideas to take back to class and their families.”

– Primary School Teacher

“KidsView awakened our students’ awareness of the challenges facing people living in poverty, particularly in the Philippines. They went away with a new understanding of global issues and it empowered them to become keenly involved in social justice groups back at the college.”

– Secondary School Teacher
