WINNER – AUDIENCE AWARD FEATURE FILM (HRAFF 2017)

OFFICIAL SELECTION (Auckland International Film Festival 2018)

In every neighbourhood there is someone like you.

An unlikely Australian-Filipino group of new friends create a large outdoor art exhibition which doubles as housing in two of the most impoverished, notorious Philippine dumpsite slums. Street artists, garbage scavengers, filmmakers, school children, laundry workers and gangsters collaborate to transform stories and artwork into a practical, public display of pride and resilience; a celebratory spectacle amongst the mountains of garbage, which invites people to look toward the slums, rather than looking the other way.

Raw, confronting, surprising, uplifting, charming and visually striking, Happyland invites the audience to meet the communities which have such fearsome reputations. Hear their stories, and follow how new friends from very different backgrounds work together to bring an ambitious project to life in the wastelands of Manila.

Bahay Tuluyan’s generosity, exceptional skills and respectful relationships with the Happyland community were central to the production of the Happyland film. Princess, Yan Yan and his two younger brothers, who all featured in the film, are now part of the Bahay Tuluyan family, with secure housing, nutrition, clothing, education, and the freedom to grow and play as children.

It is crucial that Bahay Tuluyan continues to work in communities and on the streets; promoting and protecting children’s rights; providing education and training programs, social assistance, first aid and healthy meals; and providing services for all children in need of special protection. Kaff-eine and cheeseagle are proud to support Bahay Tuluyan by offering this fundraising screening of Happyland.
